On tour, we will travel Bayan-Ulgii province where the national minority Kazakhs or Eagle Hunting people live. We take a return flight to Bayan-Ulgii and discover the unique life of the Kazakh nomads. Mongolian Kazaks have been keeping their tradition and custom at its origin for hundreds of years. Among the traditions, eagle training and eagle hunting is the most interesting and attractive thing. In Bayan-Ulgii, we will visit and stay with an eagle training Kazakh family, mount on horseback and got to the mountains to see how the Kazakhs train Eagles and hunt with them. According to your request, we are able to extend the Kazakh homestay to explore more about their life and the falconry. If you have more time, you may see more attractions and have more activities such as hiking on a glacier in the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, visit families of different ethnic groups, hear throat singing, discover prehistoric relicts, horse, and camel riding tour.

Have a short tour of the provincial center town Ulgii and the journey continues to Altantugts sum. Visit an eagle training Kazakh family and discover their unique lifestyle, try Kazakh foods and stay with the Kazakh family.

We will mount on horses (driving is available if you do not have much horse riding experience) and go to nearby mountains to see how the Kazakhs hunt with the Eagles. Hunting real animals will require days sometimes. Therefore, they use baits for the eagle hunting demonstration. Today, we also see balbal stones and petroglyphs. In the afternoon, drive to the provincial center town Ulgii.

Ulgii, a central town of Bayan-Ulgii province is located 1600 km from Ulaanbaatar and taking an internal flight is the best way to save time, money and meet the Eagle Hunting People not driving much. The internal flight takes 2.5 hours on one way. The Kazaks are nomadic people move in search of pasture and water for their animals. Therefore, the driving distance from Ulgii to the Eagle Hunting Kazaks may vary. Our host family’s pasturelands are within150 km distance from Ulgii at its furthest. We will join and stay in their home. We use travel mats for the night sleep. Having private room is not a way of Mongolian nomads’ life. We will ride horses when going to mountains for Eagle training and eagle hunting. If you do not have much horse riding experience, you can sit in the vehicle and follow the eagle hunters. Once you are in the mountains, some hiking is required to find the best place for the hunting demonstration.
The Eagle Hunting and Kazakh Homestay tour is available all year round. The Eagles and the horses are not strong after the long and harsh winter. Therefore, summer, autumn, and winter are the best time to take the tour. The Kazaks or the Eagle Hunting People live in the far western mountainous part of Mongolia about 1600 km distance. We arrange the tour with return internal flights. If you are traveling in summer, we can arrange the tour overland including some attractions and scenic place of the Gobi, the north and the west of Mongolia. About 15 to 19 days are required for the overland tour. You may check the seasonal and monthly weather of Mongolia here. The temperature is about 5°C lower than central or southern part of Mongolia as the western part of the country is mountainous and higher elevated, As well as, it gets cold earlier in autumn and become warm late in summer. Therefore, we suggest you bring warm clothes either in summer months. To get an idea of items to pack, you may check our discovery and winter tour packing list. For added warmth during colder months, you can borrow our traditional warm garment “deel”. We will provide the deel upon request.
Tourist accommodations are not well developed in western Mongolia due to its remoteness. The tour includes one day stay with an eagle hunting family and one night at a ger camp or in a hotel in the town. We accommodate you in a ger camp in summer and at a hotel in winter or after the ger camps are closed. We will share a ger or house with the eagle hunting family. You may get some information about the nomadic home stay at Mongolia nomad family. WC and shower will be available when stay at a ger camp or a hotel, but not available when staying with the eagle hunting family. Accommodation in Ulaanbaatar has not included in the itinerary, and we can book a hotel of your preferred category in Ulaanbaatar. Therefore, feel free to request us to book a hotel in Ulaanbaatar.
A local English-speaking guide of Bayan-Ulgii will serve for you. Our guides of Ulaanbaatar can serve you in Bayan-Ulgii, but there will be some additional fee as the guide should fly with you from/to Ulaanbaatar. The majority of our guides are English speaking. We also have some guides who speak German, French, Spanish and Japanese. They are all professionally trained, friendly, helpful, and most of them were born and grown in the countryside. Therefore, they have good knowledge about their country’s culture, tradition, history, and geography.
Four wheels driving Russian vans driven by experienced, friendly and safe mechanic-drivers will serve you in Bayan-Ulgii. Sedan car or 4xWD Japanese vehicles will serve for transfers of the internal flights. Different car types are available upon request, and you may check the tour vehicles at Mongolia transportation.

You will witness the eagle hunting, the eagle training and Mongolian Kazakh's custom and tradition not traveling far west. About 20 eagle hunters come to the area from western Mongolia to show us how they train eagles for hunting. Traditional music and dance performance, Kazakh traditional games and equestrians' competitions are part of the festival.
