LOCATION: The Kharkhiraa and Turgen Mountains tower Uvs and Khovd province territory 1500 km to the west of Ulaanbaatar. Kharkhiraa and Turgen are two mountains divided by Kharkhiraa passage and a part of Uvs Nuur strictly protected area. The mountain peaks are two snow-capped twin towers: Kharkhiraa Mountain peak is 4037 m Most Uul and Turgen Mountain peak is 3965 m Deglii Tsagaan. There are 10 snow-capped peaks and several glaciers in Kharkhiraa and Turgen Mountains. Among the mountains are Olon Nuuriin Khundii or Many Lake Plain, a picturesque area surrounded by the snow-capped mountains. These untouched pristine mountains are rich in flora and wildlife such as snow-leopard, red deer, ibex, wild boar, and Altai snowcock. The mountains are a famous adventure travel destination of mountaineering, mountain trekking, wildlife observing, wildlife/nature photography, horse and camel trekking. You can discover ancient rock drawings, balbal stones, tombs, burial mounds, and a monastery ruin. The surrounding pastureland area is home to multi-ethnic group nomads. Among them, Khoton ethnics are famous for their Shamanic ritual.
