Eej Khairkhan Mountain is a part of 22.475 hectares of Eej Khairkhan Nature Reserve since 1992, designated to protect the local environment of the Gobi desert area. The Eej Khaikhan Mountain locates on the territory of Tsogt Soum, Gobi Altai province. 150 km (directly) and 250 km by road in the south of provincial center Altai town and 1120 km from Ulaanbaatar. It is a single granite stone mountain abruptly rising on the sand and gravel plains between Mongol Altai and Gobi Altai Mountains. The mountain’s location on the migrating route of the wild creatures allows some lucky travelers to see the Argali, Ibex, and snow leopard. The eroded granite rocks form many spectacular shaped rock formations. It is fun to walk in the mountains seeing the rock formations. The mountain name Eej Kharkhan means “Mother Mountain” due to its overall shape and historical evidence. The mountain has been worshipped by Mongolians. Particularly the symbolic rock formations such as mother's womb rock for purification, male rock for a big family, couple rock for marriage, ingot rock for wealth, etc. On the eastern slope of Eej Khairkhan Mountain are nine pools called “Nine pots” and is the top attraction of the mountain. The pots have 1-6 m in diameter. The first 5 pot distance is 40-50 cm to each other and easily accessible. The pots have depths of 2-8 m. It gets difficult to reach the 6th and next pots due to the slippery surface and not recommended to try.
Besides the rock formations, the mountain has well-kept ancient rock drawings and a cave where Buddhist monk Ravdan lived for several years since 1923 due to a survey of Dr. Ochirbat.
Mongolian largest lizards will be seen in the mountain. Nonpoisonous Gobi desert Yellow Spider is attracted by light. Therefore, we suggest you protect from the spider bite.
